A month later I was a passenger in a friend’s car, not driving, when a police officer pulled us over for expired tags. The officer took everyone’s ID. Because my license was suspended the moment I handed mine over, he treated my real license as a fake ID and arrested me.

Often, yes. Many resolve through Defensive Driving School, a diversion program, or a reduction to a civil violation, with no criminal conviction. A good outcome is not automatic, which is why you want a lawyer who knows how to push for it.
Won't the prosecutor just dismiss it or give me defensive driving?
Not automatically, and not for everyone. Defensive Driving School and reductions depend on the charge, your record, and how the case is handled. Assuming you will get the deal and going in alone is how people end up convicted. We make the case for the better outcome.
I already went to the arraignment myself. Is it too late?
Usually not too late, but it is harder. People who try to negotiate alone at the first court date often say the wrong thing or look desperate, and once the prosecutor digs in, even a lawyer cannot always undo it. The best outcomes come from hiring before your first court date.
Can I just use a public defender?
Not for these charges. A public defender is only appointed for DUIs, certain misdemeanors, and felonies. Criminal speeding and reckless driving do not qualify, so it is a private lawyer or no lawyer at all.
